Inner Faith

November 2008

Life on earth is a trickster sometimes. Things appear to be going one way and then, bam, they totally change on you. Can we not all agree on this? Then why do we continue to place our moods upon wordly circumstances? When we do this, our emotions become ping pong balls. It is tiring, it hurts, and we can become angry and fearful of life.

I think we do it because we care so much about earthly matters. We are swayed by our senses, the physical parts of ourselves. WE ARE HUMAN. But there is more to us than our human-ness; WE ARE SPIRIT. We have soul.

It is a beautiful thing that we can give our attention to the people and things around us because we are overflowing with the capacities of love and care, sharing, helping and working together. It is when people or things do not respond to our love or giving the way we would like for them to that we get caught in a downward spiral of negative emotion and action.

Human means 'light manifest'. I believe all human beings come from the Light, which in our country is most popularly referred to as God. Call it what you will, it is an eternal force of goodness and love and bestows infinite holy fruits unto its children. In the Bible, these are called the Fruits of the Spirit. I really resonate with that, and to meditate on any of them brings me a peace and comfort that is hard to consistently find in my earthly relationships.

The fruit I meditated on today was inner faith. Not just the faith that comes from witnessing something in the external world repeatedly, but a faith from inside of myself, that remains unshakable and unaffected by outer circumstances. This inner faith is faith in God, and expands the third dimension.

What do I have faith in on a deeper level, I asked myself? We benefit greatly from getting clear on that, writing our faith down, stating it, and then returning to that faith everyday, as much as needed, to keep the faith. Don't expect the world to keep it for you, or even your closest companion. Hope. But do not depend. You have to cultivate the inner faith yourself.

One way to do that is that if you find yourself thinking on something that does not feel good or right, see if it lines up with what you believe in. If it does not, then don't give it the time of day.

What do you believe in, from the deepest part of your self? You need to be clear on this first before you can be a person of solid faith. Ask how your beliefs serve you, your family and the world. How do they serve God? Really look at how your faith is forming your action, your character.

It is very important to not belittle yourself if you are not living in accordance with your faith. Guilt is not going to take us where we want to go. Guilt and fear are some of the cheapest rooms in the house, easier to occupy. Just keep returning to your inner faith again and again. You will live it more and more each time.

Faith is a foundation for righteous living. But it cannot stand alone. That is one of my most favorite things about the Fruits of the Spirit. They all need one another to thrive, and support each other. It is like they are one big family of Angels. Faith without compassion can become dogmatic and controlling. Faith without service is useless. But Faith is essential to the full embodiment of truth, love and light.

Exercise yourself by making a list titled, 'What I beleive'. Examine your Faith. Cultivate it. Radiate it.
